It’s been a cooler than average summer in the Natural State, but that hasn’t kept the education debates in Arkansas from heating up. As the date for implementation of Common Core assessments quickly approaches, many across the country are questioning the value of the Common Core standards movement. Arkansas lawmakers will consider arguments from both sides next week when the Joint House and Senate Education Committees hear testimony from nationally-known opponents of the Common Core and Arkansas education stakeholders next Monday and Tuesday.

Thursday, July 18th, 2013: Academic Facilities Review Board, 10:00 AM @ the Division Training Room, Arkansas Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation. You can find the agenda here.

Monday, July 22nd, 2013: Interim House and Senate Education Meeting, 10:00 AM @ Committee Room A of the MAC Building in Little Rock.

The first meeting’s agenda focuses on concerns about the Common Core. Nationally-recognized experts including Joy Pullman of The Heartland Institute, Dr. Neal McCluskey of the CATO Institute, Dr. Sandra Stotsky of the University of Arkansas, and Dr. James Milgram of Stanford University, will testify, as well as parents, educators, and students from Arkansas.

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013: Interim House and Senate Education Meeting, 9:00 AM @ Committee Room A of the MAC Building in Little Rock.

The second meeting will consist mostly of testimony from a who’s who of representatives from education organizations in Arkansas, including our own Dr. Ritter from the OEP. You can find the full agenda here.

Monday, July 29th-31st, 2013: Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators (AAEA) Summer Conference @ Little Rock Marriott (formerly Peabody) in Little Rock. You can find the agenda here. The deadline for regular registration ends this Friday, July 19th, so register soon if you’re planning to attend!
