Suspension of a Five-Year Old Results in Lawsuit

In AR Legislature on March 15, 2012 at 8:05 pm

In a bit of less-than-pleasant news, a five year-old from a Rogers School District was suspended this week for his use of a four-letter-word. The school sent the child home with a one-day suspension before he returned to school.

The five-year old’s father, who is also a lawyer, filed a lawsuit against the district asking that the suspension though it had already been served, be removed from the son’s record.

The dad’s perspective:

Swindle tells the Benton County Daily Record the school overreacted and that his son didn’t understand the meaning of the word.

The school district’s statement:

We expect all of our students K-12 to use appropriate language and when inappropriate language is used there are consequences,” Janie Darr, school superintendent.

What do you think? Are either of these two parties overreacting?
