We followed the State Board of Ed monthly meeting today and wanted to give you a quick update. The full agenda for the meeting can be found here.

  • The meeting started out with the Commissioner’s Report. It looks like Ed Secretary Duncan is going to grant waivers to states from the NCLB proficiency mark. More information will be forthcoming regarding these waivers. Dr. Kimbrell stated they are still learning the details regarding how the newest budget deal at the federal level will effect students in Arkansas. It is estimated that we will lose 3-6% of our funding, but the details of these changes have not yet been determined.
  • Jeremy Lassiter was recognized and honored for his work at the Department of Education as General Counsel and the National Guard.
  • There was an interesting discussion (no action taken) about raising the academic distress threshold in Arkansas. Currently, the academic distress threshold is so low in the state of Arkansas that no schools are classified as being in Academic Distress–not even those listed as persistently low-performing in the state. As was reported, discussion was centered on how that threshold might be raised and what exactly the triggers should be.
